Açaí Bowls- Delicious, instagrammable and healthy all in one bowl

Açaí Bowls- Delicious, instagrammable and healthy all in one bowl

Happy Spring!

I thought I would share a little about Açaí Bowls! (Pronounced A-SIGH-EE)… Don’t worry I looked that up and had the computer tell me how to pronounce it about 5 times to get it right.

So wait… a WHAT bowl you might have just asked? It’s okay, I had no idea what this whole Acai trend was about until it started popping up all around the beach cities in Southern California (my home state).

So stick around for a min or so and I’ll tell you a little about this delicious breakfast/ snack bowl and the nutritional benefits of it. Now, just to be clear, I am no nutritionist… going to school for that many years… ain’t nobody got time for that! So I’m more of that nerd that follows nutritionist in IG and researches a ton about something to learn about it.

So first things first, what the heck is Acai?

Acai is a berry found in palm trees in South American rainforest kinda similar to grapes!

What is so great about Acai? It is considered to be a “superfood”. All that superfood means is “A nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being.” A few things that these magical little berries have in them are…

a. Antioxidants- packed full of them to help build your immune system
b.  Fiber – which is good for that poop cycle and help you stay full
c.  Omega 3 fatty acids– the kind of fat that is actually good for you and  your heart thanks you for it!

So what is this whole Acai bowl thing about and how do I make one?

Well, I’m sure glad you asked…

A acai bowl is frozen acai puree with a smoothie like texture. It’s a different taste than any other kind of berry but in my opinion truly delicious and refreshing! ( It might take a little getting used to so give it a few tries) In bowl form, it’s often topped with crunchy granola, fresh fruit, then topped with honey and coconut flakes.

Because I know you are just dyyyyying to know this history of this, I’ll tell you! The condensed Ashlee version.

It started its debut back in the 90’s in Brazil ( where a majority of the berries grow) and through a series of events became a popular beach snack. So Hawaii was like well hey look at that, healthy and delicious and tried selling this snack and it was a hit! Then SoCal was like what is this cool trendy thing happening in Hawaii and we want some of that action.  BOOM… and now it’s  popular in the beach cities of SoCal and slowly moving its way across America!  Moving to the Midwest I had a hard time finding many places that sell Acai bowls close by so I decided to make my own!

So first things first you want to find the Acai! You want to buy the frozen UNSWEETENED puree  packages so you are getting the purest nutritional form of it. Sambazon is the brand I was able to find at a local health food store called Earth Fare. Whole Foods and other health food stores should sell it or you can even order it on Amazon and they will ship it to you frozen for an extra fee. You might be able to find it at your local grocery store as well. Never hurts to look! With these frozen packs they have done the work for you of getting the Acai pureed for you.  Acai is a little more on the expensive side so you will be spending a little money on it.But it’s worth it because you are putting something healthy and good in your body! It came out to about $2.00 to $2.50 per a frozen pack. If you go to a shop that actually makes them for you – you want to expect to pay $6.00 to $8.00 dollars.

Like ice cream you can customize this and put all different toppings on it!

Typically, you will find it topped with granola to give it a little crunch, a variety of fresh fruit and a drizzle of honey and coconut flakes. To add a little more nutrients in it, I throw in some flax and chia seed.

Flax – Just one tablespoon provides a good amount of protein, fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, in addition to being a rich source of some vitamins and minerals.

Chia– has recently gained attention as an another excellent source of omega-3 fatty acid and fiber at 10 grams per ounce (about 2 tablespoons).

You can find both of those at most grocery stores.

I hope you get to try this tasty refreshing treat some day. I could easily eat it for breakfast, a snack and even dessert! You can also throw an Acai pack into a smoothie and that adds a delicious element.

I’m also happy to report I have now found a few places that sell them in Indy! So it’s not only a West coast thing but it’s making its way across America!

Thanks for reading. Any feedback is appreciated and let me know if you try it!

I linked some of the source articles below to check out if you want to nerd out some more about it…

Peace out!

Till another blog post,
